Quick question. Where are your supplies right now?
Some of you have a Vault on the counter and can answer in one word. Some of you are picturing a vial in the medicine cabinet, syringes in a bag, and swabs... somewhere. Either way, the box is only half of it. The other half is what you do with it. That's what this is about.
I had my supplies scattered across counters and in plastic bags for a long time. It worked, technically. It also made shot day feel like a chore I had to psych myself up for, and I didn't understand why until I started reading about what clutter does to the brain.
The five steps in 24 seconds

Your brain is paying for that dISORGANIZATION
Sabine Kastner runs a neuroscience lab at Princeton, and a lot of her work is about what happens when several things are in front of you at once. The short version: objects in your field of view compete for your brain's processing, and focusing on one of them means actively suppressing the rest.1 Princeton's alumni magazine summed up the practical side of her research this way: the more objects in view, the harder your brain has to work to filter them out. One of her suggestions in that piece was to take a few minutes to tidy your workspace.2
You don't feel that as "clutter." You feel it as a little resistance before a task.
A University of Minnesota study found something else. Researchers put people in either a tidy room or a messy one, then offered them a snack. The tidy-room group picked an apple over a chocolate bar more often, and gave more to charity when asked.3 Kathleen Vohs, who led the study, put it this way: "Being in a clean room seemed to encourage people to do what was expected of them." (The messy room had its own upside. Those people came up with more creative ideas. Good to know. Not what you want on shot day.)
Order nudges you toward the right thing. Disorder pushes you the other way.
Why shot day gets hit hardest
A junk drawer might bother you occasionally, but shot day comes every week, sometimes more, for years. And it's a multi-step job: syringe, vial, swab, draw. Every item you have to hunt for is a decision before the task, and decisions before a task make the task feel heavier.
For a lot of people, that's the dread.
It isn't the shot. It's the hunting.
Habit vs. ritual
Here's the part I found most useful. Michael Norton, a Harvard Business School professor, wrote a whole book on the difference between a habit and a ritual.4 A habit is something you do without thinking. A ritual is something you do on purpose, the same way every time, and it means something to you. His line: "Habits help us get things done, but rituals animate us and enhance our lives."5
Shot day can be either a habit or a ritual, the choice is yours. Done from a zip-lock bag or scattered across a countertop, it's a frustrating habit that feels like a chore. Done the same way, every time, with intention, it can feel like what it actually is: a satisfying ritual that is you, taking care of yourself for the long haul.
My read: give your brain a structure and it stops improvising one.
One more piece. Habit research says what makes a behavior automatic is repeating it in response to the same cue, over and over. In a randomized trial that followed people for 84 days, the ones who built a habit took around two months to get there (the median was 59 days).8 So the anchor step below isn't a trick. It's the mechanism.
The five steps
These are the same five in the video. They work with a Vault, a shoebox, or anything with a lid.
1. One place. Everything visible.
Everything for your routine lives in one spot, in view. Backups live in the cabinet. If you've got a Vault, you already do this. (Some medications belong in the fridge. Follow your label, and give those their own one place.)
2. Anchor it to an existing routine.
Tie shot day to something you already do without thinking, and put it right after. In the video it's the toothbrush and the razor. You don't remember to brush your teeth. You just do it. Put shot day next in line and it borrows some of that.
3. Same sequence every time.
Syringe out. Vial out. Open the swab. Wipe the top. Draw. Vial back in its slot. Same order, no improvising. (Your prep and injection steps are whatever your provider told you. This is about the order you handle your supplies, not a protocol.) Give it a couple of months and your hands know it before your head does.
4. Restock on trigger, not memory.
When you pull the last swab or the last syringe, that's the signal. Refill from the cabinet before you close the lid. The Vault holds what's ready to use. The cabinet holds what's next. Your memory holds nothing.
5. Close it with a click.
Give the ritual an ending your hands can feel. Vault owners, you already know the sound. Everyone else: a shoebox lid, a latching case, anything that shuts with a definite snap. I can't point you to a study on lid sounds. I can tell you that after a few weeks, that click is the moment shot day is over, and your brain seems to agree.
Try it for a month
Not two weeks. A month. Rituals take longer than you'd think to create. If shot day feels lighter by the end of it, keep going. If one step isn't working, change that step, not the whole thing. The goal is a setup you'll still be using a year from now.
